Dersin amacı, öğrencilerin ulusal ve uluslararası siyasetin en belirleyici unsurlarından biri olan milliyetçiliği karşılaştırmalı bir bakış açısıyla değerlendirmelerini sağlamaktır. Böylece, ders, öğrencilerin günümüz ulus devletlerinin tarihsel süreçlerini, oluşumlarını ve iç dinamiklerini daha iyi anlamalarına ve açıklayabilmelerine yardımcı olur.

Dersin yedi haftadan oluşan kursun ilk yarısında, milliyetçilik çalışmalarına farklı yaklaşımlar, çeşitli ulus inşası modelleri ve ulusun tartışmalı kavramsallaştırmaları gibi teorik bir çerçeve sunulur. İkinci bölümde, bu teorik zemin, farklı özelliklere sahip vakaların incelenmesiyle pratiğe dökülür.
