The purpose of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of database systems, focusing on the design, implementation, and management of relational databases. Students will learn to model real-world scenarios using ER and EER diagrams, develop efficient database schemas through normalization, and perform data operations using SQL. The course also aims to equip students with practical skills in database automation, transaction management, query optimization, and security, enabling them to design, manage, and maintain reliable and effective database systems.
The course Database Design and Management introduces the fundamental concepts, structure, and components of database systems, along with their applications and advantages. Students learn various data models, with a focus on the relational model, including tables, keys, and constraints. The course covers relational algebra and its mapping to SQL queries, enabling students to perform selection, projection, joins, and set operations. ER and Enhanced ER (EER) diagrams are studied for conceptual modeling, and students learn to convert these diagrams into relational schemas. Core SQL topics such as Data Definition Language (DDL) and Data Manipulation Language (DML), multi-table queries, aggregation, grouping, and Common Table Expressions (CTEs) are included. Emphasis is placed on database design principles and normalization (1NF, 2NF, 3NF, BCNF) to ensure efficient and consistent schemas. Students also explore indexing and query optimization techniques, along with advanced features like views, functions, and triggers for automation. Transaction management, concurrency control, and ACID properties are discussed to ensure reliable data operations. The course further addresses database backup, recovery, and security, including user roles and privileges. Finally, students consolidate their learning through a project, implementing a complete database system that integrates all theoretical and practical concepts covered during the course.
