Bu dersin amacı öğrencileri altı temel sosyal bilim kavramını tanıtmaktır. Bu kavramlar "devlet", "sınıf/statü/elit", "sivil toplum", "demokrasi", Foucauldyen anlamda "iktidar" ve "toplumsal cinsiyet" olarak belirlenmiştir. Dönem boyunca bu kavramların çeşitli kuramsal çerçeveler içerisinde edindiği değişik tanımlar değerlendirilecektir. Marxist kavramsal çerçeve, devlet merkezli Weberyan çerçeve, Foucauldyen paradigma ve feminist teoriler ele alınacaktır.

Bu ders sosyal bilimlerde temel kavramlar ve bunların temel kuramsal çerçeveler tarafından kavramsallaştırılma biçimleri ile ilgilidir.
