Bu derste öncelikle, Arkaik Çağ Yunan Şiiri'nin temel öğelerinin belirmesinde etkin rol oynayan coğrafi, ekonomik ve edebiyat üretimine ilişkin koşullar ele alınarak nasıl bir geçişsel bir başlangıcı olduğu incelenmektedir. Ancak derste daha çok Yunan lirik şiirinin kökeni, lirik şiir türleri, bu türlerin yoğunlaştığı temalar ele alınır. Arkaik Yunan Şiirinde şairin toplumsal rolünde yaşanan değişimin yanı sıra, her bir lirik şiiri türünün kendilerine has yaklaşımları örnek şiirler eşliğinde değerlendirilir. Bu süreç tarihsel olarak Hesiodos, Homerosçu İlahiler ve Arkhilokhos'un iambos'larıyla başlatılıp Pindaros'un epinikion'larına kadar izlenir.
Bu ders, Arkaik Çağ Yunan Şiiri'nin temel sorunlarına yönelik filolojik yöntemleri ve bakış açılarını inceler ve bu konuya öğrencinin giriş yapmasını hedefler.
