The major purpose of this course is to provide a comprehensive introduction to sociology. Throughout the course, students will develop foundational knowledge of key sociological concepts, theories, and approaches, while learning to examine the social world from a sociological perspective.
The course covers major topics including identity, norms, groups, social roles, socialization, social stratification and inequality, gender, globalization, social change, economic life, work and employment, and social institutions such as family and religion. These topics are approached comparatively, drawing on examples from Turkey as well as other developed and developing countries to explore sociological phenomena across different social contexts.
Teaching and learning methods include lectures, class activities, discussions, and student writing assignments. These are designed to encourage active engagement, critical thinking, and the application of sociological concepts to contemporary social issues and everyday life.
